Most Japanese desserts include the sweet red bean called, “azuki.”
Eating beans for dessert may seem counter-intuitive for some, but if you encounter any of these seen below, don’t pass up the chance for something new and delicious!
- Taiyaki - a griddle cake most commonly filled with sweet bean (other typical fillings are chocolate and custard pudding).
- Daifuku - a mochi (pounded rice) ball with various fillings, most commonly different variations with sweet bean paste.
- Dorayaki - small pancakes with sweet bean paste sandwiched between.
- Oshiruko - a sweet bean soup served hot or cold. Sometimes topped with a grilled mochi.
