Sapporo Snow Festival, a.k.a “yuki matsuri” (“snow festival”), takes place in the beginning of February and is probably the most spectacular winter event in Japan. Ice sculptures and giant snow sculptures are constructed and displayed in Odori Park, an expansive park in the city of Sapporo. There are enough things to see in the festival to fill a full day of sightseeing.
Information about the Snow Festival
Here are some pictures that I took several years ago, when I journeyed up there.
Later on you can enjoy miso ramen while planning a weekend skiing at some of Hokkaido’s best ski resorts. One of the most popular souvenirs in Hokkaido is “shiroi koibito” (lit. “white lover”), 2 cookies with white chocolate sandwiched between and anything with yubari melon (a special top-grade cantaloupe cultivated in Yubari, Hokkaido).

Shiroi Koibito, aka White Lover…Not to be confused with a white person that happens to be your lover
Take a good look at these melons! Odds are you cannot afford to spend this much on fruit.
